Lake Placid

The Lake Placid region is quite large and covers quite a few towns, in addition to Lake Placid. It is the midst of the 6 million acre Adirondack State Park.

We followed Rt. 9 North thru Upper Jay to Wilmington, NY, where we found the Whiteface Mountain KOA Kampground. Whiteface Mountain is a very large campground.

In addition to camping sites, it offers camping cabins, a large store, a playground and laundry facilities.
The campground is located on the banks of the Ausible River. Right down the road we found the High Falls Gorge. We didn't take the tour, because we wanted to get on the road. The entry fee was $12.00 per person.

The city of Lake Placid, NY is filled with shops, motels, restaurants and signs directing you to the sites of the 1980 Winter Olympics. It was extremely busy the day we were there, as the Barnum and Bailey Circus was in town. Lake Placid offers the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. We missed the ride, but enjoyed the quaint train station. We drove through the Olympic Village and continued on to Saranac Lake on Rt. 86.

Saranac Lake, NY

The town and surrounding area offered lots of places to camp and hike. In fact this seems to be one of the major reasons why people visit here. (To see list of Adirondack Park Campgrounds, click here. The area also boasts of it's excellent hunting and fishing.

We found the mountains incredibly beautiful as all of these pictures show. Robert Louis Stevenson's cottage is located in Lake Saranac.

Tupper Lake, NY

On Rt. 3 south we stopped for lunch at the Skyline Ice Cream Drive In we met the owner, Dean if we could take his pictures for our site.

We highly recommend the food and wish he and his wife Deb the best of luck with the expansion they have planned for next year.
